Several players play on top Texas Holdem sites with the hopes that one day they will have the bankroll to play versus Tom Dwan, known as “durrr” to the online players. The 23 year old has become one of the most well known poker players in the world. He usually plays on his Full Tilt download, so it makes sense that most of his success has come online. However, he is starting to make some noise in the live arena, as well. He has participated in several live tournaments since becoming legal in the U.S., and he has appeared on a wide variety of poker television shows.
When Dwan first learned to play poker, he started on Paradise, one of the best US poker sites back then. Once he was able to beat the sit-n-go’s there, he moved to cash games on Full Tilt. Dwan has played countless hours online. Mastering the art of multi-tabling gave him the ability to see hundreds of thousands of hands on US poker sites, and he quickly moved up in stakes while building up a massive bankroll.
Being the cream of the crop doesn’t mean your game is variance-free. Dwan has gone through some impressive swings during his online career, which isn’t surprising considering his main game is heads-up No Limit Hold’em or Pot Limit Omaha. He has both won and lost millions in a single session. His most famous downswing was thanks to a Swedish player named “Isildur1”, who sat with him on multiple heads-up tables. When the week was over, Isildur1 had taken $5 million out of Dwan’s bankroll. Losing that much money would cause me to give up poker and just start playing free bet sportsbooks, but Dwan has played enough poker to realize that these swings are just part of the game.
The infamous $1 million challenge was issued by Dwan at the start of 2009. With the exception of Phil Galfond, he is willing to 4-table with anyone heads-up for 50,000 hands. Dwan will put up $1.5 million for his opponent’s $500k – the winner of the 50k series will receive the extra money. Patrik Antonius is Dwan’s first opponent for this challenge, and to date Dwan is leading by $1.8 million after 40k hands. If you would like to take this challenge, simply get a Full Tilt Poker download and make a screen name.
To date Dwan has cashed for around $1.5 million in live tournament poker. He has cashes all over the world, including in the EPT, the Aussie Millions, and of course the WPT and WSOP. His best WSOP finish was this year in a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event where he finished 2nd for $381,885. A lot of people were very happy that Dwan did not win a WSOP event this year because apparently there were a lot of bracelet bets involving him. I would rather play Internet slots than make crazy WSOP props like these!
Dwan had respect from his fellow online players from day one, but his live tournament successes as well as his TV appearances have earned him some respect from his live counterparts, as well. He’s only 23 years old and look at all the fame he’s achieved already! It’s safe to assume that he will enjoy many more accomplishments throughout his career. Are you inspired now?
